12/30/2023 0 Comments Baseball meta batIt’s not a run yet, but it’s the first step to getting there. In baseball, getting to first base means you’ve gotten off the mark – you’re on your way to scoring a run for your team. You might say you’re going into the extra innings in negotiations when buying a house, or even if you’re just staying back late at work one evening. Outside of baseball, we will use this phrase for anything that goes overtime. The game continues until there is a clear winner. In baseball, an extra inning is a tie-breaker inning if the regular gameplay has been completed without a result or with a tied result. Similarly, a judge might say this in a courtroom when dismissing a case but warning the culprit they have no more chances. You might use this in gambling, for example, when you’re down to your last few dollars and only have one more shot at winning. Outside of baseball, it’s a similar idea: you’re down to your last chance. In baseball, when you’re “down to the last out”, it means you’ve got no more chances – the next person who gets out will be the last, and your innings will end. In real life, we will consider a doubleheader anything that is a too big consequential activity in a row, such as going to two job interviews one after the other. It’s also a term used in other sports such as football. Often, these games are played by the same players or teams. ![]() A Double HeaderĪ doubleheader is a term used in baseball when two big games are played in one day. It’s used in any context and even other sports where something happens that changes the plan or acts as a surprising obstacle to success. Outside of baseball, to throw a curveball is to catch someone off guard. The ball curves – often very late – and can catch the batter off guard. In baseball, a curveball is an especially difficult ball to hit. Here, they are just doing it to “cover their bases” rather than because it’s absolutely necessary. For example, someone might take extra conservative measures to provide backup plans in case their first plan fails. Outside of baseball, we use the term to refer to the need to be ready for all contingencies. To cover your bases in baseball is to make sure there are players on the fielding team watching and guarding all the bases in the baseball diamond so that the ball can be passed quickly to someone who is on the base, so the runners can be caught out. For example, if you see a television advertisement that looks unprofessional, you might say that it’s a “bush league” advertisement. We use this term derogatorily in reference to someone who has done a poor job. It’s the league that regular people who aren’t too good at baseball play for social purposes. In baseball, the bush league is the amateur league (also: beer league). It is often used in business when you get a job working for (or a contract working with) a top-level firm in the industry. ![]() Similarly, in real life, you can talk about “making it to the big league” as a way of saying that you are now competing, playing, or participating in the elite level of anything. To make it to the big league or major league in baseball is to make it to the top level of competition. These terms come from the idea of someone hitting a baseball a long, long way. You can also call something a “big hit”, for example, if a new album ranks #1, you’d call it a big hit. For example, a great musician might be a “big hitter” in the music scene. To call someone a big hitter is to say they’re one of the best and greatest in their field. For example, a ballpark figure on the valuation of a house might be a guess to the nearest $100,000. Outside of baseball, we now use this term to describe an estimate or educated guess of a numerical figure. So, to seek out a ballpark figure is to get an estimate within the ballpark, but not to guarantee any specific location. When playing baseball, the ball will fall somewhere in the ballpark, but it’s hard to say exactly where. Even people who have never watched or played baseball will know and understand many of these! Baseball Metaphors, Sayings, and Idioms 1. Others are not metaphorical, but remain useful euphemisms and analogies – again, to help explain something in known shorthand.īelow, we’ve collated out 35 favorite baseball idioms, sayings, and metaphors that have made their way into everyday speech. Many of these are metaphorical because the terms aren’t used literally but as a figure of speech in which the baseball term replaces the literal event in order to explain it more effectively or in shorthand that we all understand. ![]() It’s such an influential sport that terms and idioms from baseball have become commonplace sayings used in conversations outside of the baseball context.

Wider skin tags typically get a topical anesthetic, like lidocaine, to minimize pain, per Dr. If it’s small, it won’t be very innervated, and she’ll do the excision procedure without numbing cream, she adds. For example, if it's little and has a narrow stalk, the preferred method is a “snip” removal, where the doctor uses small, curved, sterile surgical scissors to, yep, snip the tag from the skin’s surface, Dr. There are a couple of ways board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons typically remove them, and the method depends on the size of the tag and the stalk attached to it. While we wish skin tags would simply fall off on their own, they seldom do. How do doctors approach skin tag removal? (At that point, it’s probably worth keeping the skin tag.) These aren’t necessarily harmful ingredients, but they could potentially cause irritation, burning, or allergic reactions in some people, Margarita Lolis, MD, board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, tells SELF. Other “natural” home remedies for skin tag removal you might hear about (er, read online) include apple cider vinegar, a commonly touted treatment for warts, and tea tree oil. “The biggest problem is that the things people use are not sterile and skin tags actually bleed quite a bit,” she explains. And that’s the best-case scenario you could also give yourself an infection. Unfortunately, the larger the tag-and the more likely you are to try the ol’ dental floss trick-the higher the chances of excess bleeding and skin scarring, Dr. You definitely shouldn’t try this at home though. “For larger skin tags, the hack of wrapping a piece of dental floss tightly around the base can actually work by cutting off circulation-after a few days, the tag will dry up and fall off,” Dr. There are other DIY methods modeled after ligation, an outdated practice that involves tying off the tag with a string or band. 4 “Developing a skin tag doesn’t mean that you have one of these diseases, and having one of these conditions doesn’t mean you will get skin tags, but we sometimes see an overlap in both.” Regardless of your age, if you notice you’re getting a whole new crop of skin tags, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist or primary care provider, especially if you’re experiencing other symptoms that aren’t typical for you: “There are situations where a significant number of skin tags can signal an underlying issue, such as certain autoimmune conditions like Crohn’s disease, certain polyp-causing gastrointestinal syndromes, or a growth-related syndrome known as acromegaly,” Dr. Research suggests that skin tags can appear as early as your teen years, but are most likely to show up after you turn 40 (and that likelihood levels off again after age 70-who knew?). But many conditions that correlate with (not cause!) their formation are likelier to develop in adulthood than in childhood. There’s no direct connection between age and skin tags, Tracy Evans, MD, board-certified dermatologist and medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in San Francisco, tells SELF. 12/30/2023 0 Comments Usb to headphone jack adapterLasuney’s hub is well made, with good port spacing. In all fairness, our other disk-to-disk tests took about the same amount of time. It took twice as long to transfer data compared to other hubs we tested. The other problem we found is that the SD card slot is way too slow. While we really like the pair of HDMI ports for dual-display configurations, the fact is, you’ll probably need to limit yourself to a pair of 1080p displays to avoid saturating the bus and slowing down the connection. Customers on Amazon have reported that they only got one to work, probably because the bus itself was saturated. Power input is rated at 100W in, with about 87W available to the laptop.īut the USB-C bus the hub runs on top of simply won’t support all of the ports being used at once, which is a bit of a gotcha. Thanks to ethernet support, the hub can replace many of your wired connections. Lasuney’s 10-in-1 hub (two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two HDMI 1.2 ports DisplayPort gigabit ethernet, microSD/SD, USB-C power input) offers a lot for your money, including an unusual mix of not one, but two HDMI ports, and even a DisplayPort. Otherwise, the two HDMI ports will only support two 4K displays at an eye-wearying 30Hz, not 60Hz. We recommend not buying the more expensive $79.99 Anker 8-in-1 Hub on Amazon unless you’re happy connecting to two 1080p (and not 4K) displays…which is perfectly fine. The hub offers an 18-month warranty, and it even ships with a carrying pouch. Cord length is about 8.5 inches, above the standard 6-inch length.Īnker’s hub was among the fastest we tested to deliver data under load, including simultaneous data transfer between USB-A ports while the SD ports were active. Ethernet is excluded, however, so you’ll need to use Wi-Fi instead. (The charger allows up to 100W in, but supplies 85W.) An HDMI port allows for 4K/30Hz video or 1080p/60Hz video to a single external display, standard for the category. There’s also a 5Gbps USB-C connection for data, plus a second USB-C port for power input at up to 85W rated. Overall, Anker’s hub is well designed, with adequate spacing between the two 5Gbps USB-A ports. Anker’s hub was among the coolest we’ve tested under load, at about 87 degrees. It’s also a bit more expensive than its rivals. Anker’s 7-in-1 USB-C hub feels surprisingly weighty (3.5 ounces), with a premium metallic (aluminum and polycarbonate) sheen. Generally, the larger, powered docks offer more features, but that may change.Ĭan a USB-C hub feel elegant? This one does. If you want to add a pair of additional displays (especially 4K), or high-speed SSD drives, we’d recommend you look at our list of 10Gbps DisplayLink docks at the bottom of this page or 40Gbps Thunderbolt docking stations. Here’s the short answer: If you want to connect your laptop to a printer, an SD card or microSD card, mouse, keyboard, or legacy 1080p monitor, stick with a 10Gbps USB-C hub. ![]() It can all be a little confusing, so we’ve included an expanded FAQ and a buying guide at the bottom. ![]() More advanced features lie within the best Thunderbolt docks, which we’ve listed separately. Now, I’ve dealt with my fair share of call centres in the past, but this one was ridiculous. After calling the number on their website, a guy passed me off to a call centre which seemed to be in India. I tried to talk to customer support at HGST, who it turns out is a Western Digital subsidiary. It seemed that maybe one of my four drives was faulty in some way, but it was hard to pin-point which one it was. I spoke to Drobo’s technicians and they were helpful, even going so far as to buy some of the same drives to test them and see if they could see the same issues. When I did this, I wasn’t quite getting the performance I was hoping for. I purchased an empty Dorbo 5D3 and decided to populate it with 4x 8TB HGST NAS drives.
